NINE

Kade rushed through the castle, snarling at anyone who dared step near. Two of his closest men had died in a battle that never should have happened. The only reason he had survived the attack was because Nolan had thrown himself into the line of fire when an attacker had come up behind him.

He wasn’t surprised to find Wilson waiting for him when he approached his chamber. He had barked the order to have him summoned to the first person he’d seen after passing the gates.

“What the hell happened?” Wilson asked as they went in and closed the door.

“Someone tipped them off. We were ambushed. Both Nolan and Bennet are dead.”

“Fuck.” Wilson slammed his fist onto the wooden table. Had the table not been made of hardwood and iron, it would have splintered under the blow.

“Who else knew about the meeting?” He paced the length of the room, his growls echoing on the stone walls.

“Martin, Jerald, Robert, and Marina.”

Fuck, the last one, he hadn’t expected, but it made sense. Marina was as sweet as could be until you crossed her. And he’d angered her when he’d refused her over a year ago. She was pretty in her own way, but she held no interest for him. Not like Meadow had. Even now, months after he’d been with her, the thought of his mate had blood pumping to his cock and need slamming through him. Soon, he’d be able to go to her and bring her home. They were close to finding the traitors. Once he rid the castle of the danger, nothing would keep him from getting her.

“It’s not Jerald or Martin. They’ve both gone above and beyond to aid in our cause. Besides, neither of them knew the exact location of the meeting. Only Robert and Marina knew.”

Kade thought of his childhood friend, and although he wanted to believe Robert wouldn’t betray him, he couldn’t be certain. Too many people had died. He wouldn’t risk the tentative peace he’d forged for their clan on sentimentality.

“Watch your back tonight,” Wilson warned. “The last thing we need is for the Raven Claw representatives to get hurt.”

Kade groaned. “I know. If I could reschedule their visit, I would, but they’ve already traveled a day to get here. I can’t turn them away.”

“I’ll let you know if I hear any rumblings in the castle.”

Kade headed to the shower as soon as Wilson left. Bennet and Nolan’s dried blood was all over his clothes, on his skin. Their lives had been cut short, and for what? Petty jealousy? He growled again. Whoever had betrayed them would pay for each and every life they had taken.

He could smell the succulent elk they’d hunted and the fresh roasted vegetables the cooks had taken from the gardens long before he reached the dining hall. He wasn’t late, but no matter how early he arrived for the evening meal, the food was always hot and ready for him.

Tonight, with the guests joining them, he made sure to get there even sooner.
